To Perc or Not to Perc

Learn how each style of bong percolator can take your next hit to the next level.

To Perc or Not to Perc

In recent years, percolators have become a staple and are one of the most common features you’ll see when shopping for bongs, you will find everything from simple ice catchers to advanced designs like turbine percs. If you are new to bongs or simply looking for a new water pipe for your collection, you might wonder what they actually do and how much they matter.

Put simply, a percolator is an attachment inside your water pipe that cools and filters the smoke for a smoother hit. By breaking the smoke into smaller bubbles, it helps diffuse everything for a less harsh and more enjoyable inhale.

There are plenty of styles, each offering a slightly different smoking experience. The right choice comes down to factors like the size of your bong and your own lung capacity. A well made perc can customize your session, prevent coughing fits, reduce splashback, cool the smoke, and even boost flavour.

This guide walks you through some of the most popular and interesting percolators on the market and how each one can take your next hit to the next level.

Before diving into how they work, it’s worth thinking about how much filtration you actually want and what kind of bong you’re looking for. Not all percolators are made equal, some offer light, simple cooling while others create a much stronger draw that requires bigger lungs (and often a taller neck on your bong). You can even double, triple, or stack multiple percolators together for maximum diffusion and customization.

Things to Consider

  1. The size of your bong
  2. The strength of your draw
  3. The neck shape of your bong

Honeycomb percolators are among the most common on the market. They feature a flat disc design, often stacked in single, double, or triple layers. Each disc is perforated with tiny holes, and when stacked, these holes form a honeycomb pattern that increases the surface area for smoke to pass through.

As the smoke moves through the tiny holes, it breaks into small bubbles, which increases heat transfer and cools it down for a smoother hit. One of the biggest advantages of honeycomb percs is that they do not add extra drag, so you can pull smoothly without needing a longer or harder draw.

The main drawback is that honeycomb percolators can be prone to clogging and may be a little delicate to clean. However, with a consistent cleaning routine, they can significantly improve your water pipe experience.

Next up is the most universal percolator, the tree perc. This can be identified by its multiple arms that branch out from a central tube. Smoke travels from the middle and then diffuses through the arms. Most designs feature six to eight arms, but there is no set limit. These arms offer strong filtration because each one has small openings that help cool the smoke and strip away impurities.

You can easily tailor the experience by choosing a tree perc with the number of arms and the overall size that suits your preferred level of filtration. Keep in mind that the arms can be delicate and are more likely to break if handled or cleaned improperly. As well as, after frequent use, the arms can also clog at different rates, which may lead to an inconsistent draw over time.

Another popular design is the matrix percolator, which uses a mix of horizontal and vertical slits, similar to the honeycomb and showerhead design. These percs are usually made of slim discs stacked near the base on the bong. As smoke passes through, it is forced to churn in order to push through the many slits, creating strong diffusion.

These percs are known for producing some of the best filtration on the market. The intense churning creates a high volume of bubbles that deliver a silky smooth pull, and the bubbling action also puts on quite a show, which makes it a favourite for those looking for aesthetics from their perc.

The downside is that this high level of filtration can increase drag as the smoke has a longer path to travel. This can become intense in taller bongs or pieces with multiple chambers. Due to the amount of bubbles the matrix perc creates, it’s important to consider whether you are comfortable with potential splashback before adding one to a shorter bong.

If aesthetic is the goal for a perc, look no further than the turbine percolator. Also called the cyclone or vortex perc, it stands out for both its look and function. The design forces the water to spin in a whirlpool motion, guided up the sides of the pipe through angled slits. This frantic movement cools and diffuses the smoke, whilst creating a striking visual effect.

However, while the turbine perc is captivating to watch, the drag can be significant and it takes a big pull to draw the smoke. Once it reaches you, though, the hit is silky smooth and full of flavour.

The showerhead percolator, also known as a UFO perc, is another design you’ll see quite often. It features a thin vertical tube that flares at the bottom into a round chamber, resembling its namesake, a showerhead. A narrower glass tube connects this larger tube to the base of the bong. The smoke bubbles up from the bottom of the flared chamber, mimicking water falling from a showerhead.

This design is fantastic for beginners or for simple bongs. It creates minimal drag compared to other percs and is easier to clean and maintain thanks to its sturdy, compact, and less delicate construction.

Looking for an even simpler design? The dome percolator is a great choice. This perc sits at the bottom of the bong and features a dome above a central straw that pushes smoke upward. The smoke then exits through the holes in the dome. Unlike most percs that use multiple slits, the dome perc relies on larger openings, making it easy to clean and maintain.

However, with many upsides, this perc’s cooling effect may not be as strong or effective as more complex percolators.

Choosing the right percolator comes down to understanding how each design affects the hit. From simple doms to more intricate matrix styles, every perc changes the way the smoke moves and churns through the bong. Some offer maximum diffusion, others create minimal drag, while many bring a visual aspect but all provide more enjoyment to each hit. No matter your experience level or preference, there is a perc that fits your needs.
